Sailing close to the rocks
Risk is a combination of the probability that an unfortunate incident will occur and the impact if it does.

Incidents can have big consequences in our industry, which makes it all the more important to understand their scope and to manage risk in the best possible way.
But risk is also a powerhouse. Everything which involves risk generates its own driving force and energy. This is a matter of mastering challenges, accepting a potential for failure, and being assured that the level of risk is acceptable.
It is also the case, of course, that the more we seek security the less of it we get. But the more we concern ourselves with opportunities the more we secure of the security we want.
When we want something, we always run a risk – which is exactly what makes life interesting. But the desire is always strongest when the risk is high. Just look at the financial crisis.
Where dangers lurk, opportunities can also be found. And where opportunities exist, dangers lurk. These two aspects cannot be separated – without risk, we would have no opportunities.
To put it simply, you hit no targets at all unless you pull the trigger. But be careful not to shoot yourself in the foot ...
The word “risk” derives from Italian and has the root meaning of “the hazards of sailing along rocky coasts”, according to Collins English Dictionary.
Somebody who does something will do something wrong, but at least they avoid committing the biggest error of all – to do nothing.
Living is doing. Have a good voyage.
